THE BREAKDOWN: 5 Best Attractions in Monterey

Hello from Bri Steel, Broker/Realtor® & Owner of Bixby Realty!

Monterey is a California gem that never gets old. There's something about it: stunning scenery, history wherever you turn, and an energy in the air that makes you feel alive. Every outing seems to be a fresh experience, filled with memories to cherish.

Are you a nature lover, a history enthusiast, or simply seeking a relaxing escape? Monterey caters to everybody. So, if you're planning a vacation, here are five must-see attractions that I truly appreciate and I think you would as well.

Cannery Row is the center of Monterey's historic beauty. It was formerly a busy sardine cannery district, but it is now a vibrant waterfront boulevard with shops, restaurants, and galleries. You will feel a strong connection to its history when walking down Cannery Row, especially when you stop by the Cannery Row Antique Mall, which is built in an ancient sardine cannery. The streets are lined with historical markers, giving the impression that you're wandering through time.

If you enjoy literature, visit the Steinbeck Plaza, which honors John Steinbeck, whose novel "Cannery Row" popularized this neighborhood. The plaza frequently hosts local musicians, contributing to its lively ambiance.

No trip to Monterey is complete without indulging in waterfront dining. Freshly caught seafood added with a stunning ocean view may be a really enjoyable experience. The Sardine Factory is a restaurant that regularly exceeds expectations. Don't be deceived by the name; it's not a factory! It pays homage to Cannery Row's rich history, giving visitors a look into the area's past. Their menu features an excellent selection of ethically sourced seafood dishes, as well as USDA Prime cuts of beef. Furthermore, their award-winning wine collection is an excellent accompaniment to any meal. The Sardine Factory has become a neighborhood favorite and a Cannery Row staple, noted for its great service and outstanding cuisine.

A pleasant change in scenery greets you just a short drive from Monterey. Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea is an enchanting place with lovely shops, renowned galleries, and cozy cafés that entice you to stop by for awhile. Every visit seems like a fresh adventure, with hidden gems throughout the galleries and surprises around every corner. The lovely architecture, with its fairytale cottages and quaint boutiques, enhances the atmosphere. Don't forget to stop at Carmel Plaza, a nice shopping complex with a variety of stores and restaurants.

For those interested in art, the various galleries along Ocean Avenue offer everything from modern pieces to classic landscapes, usually featuring local artists. One popular location is the Carmel Art Association, one of the country's oldest artist cooperatives, where you can see and purchase original artwork.

The end of Ocean Avenue leads to Carmel Beach, a lovely stretch of white sand and crystal-clear water perfect for a relaxing afternoon. The sunsets here are particularly stunning, throwing a golden glow across the whole beach. If you are a fur parent like me, you'll like Carmel Beach! Dogs are allowed off-leash as long as they are kept under voice control. Bags for collecting dog waste are available at the entrance points and stairways; please remember to pick up after your pet and do not leave bags on the beach. Just a heads-up: dogs must be leashed in all other parts of Carmel, including the Scenic Pathway. Enjoy your time with your pup!

One of my favorite drives is the lovely Highway 1 to Big Sur. The drive provides stunning views of the craggy coastline and enormous Pacific Ocean. Each bend unveils a fresh, breathtaking perspective. Make sure to stop at the Bixby Creek Bridge for a wonderful photo opportunity. The bridge is an engineering wonder, and the surrounding vistas are breathtaking.

Along the route, there are several state parks and viewpoint places where you may stop and admire the natural beauty. Garrapata State Park and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve include wonderful hiking trails with ocean and wildlife views. Garrapata State Park's routes weave over coastal cliffs and lush redwood groves, while Point Lobos offers stunning seascapes with the opportunity to see sea otters, seals, and even migrating whales during the right season.

For me, this drive is more than just a route; it's an experience through some of the most breathtaking scenery I've ever seen. It's the ideal way to relax and enjoy California's natural splendor.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium portrays the wonder of the ocean unlike any other place. As a marine life enthusiast, I could spend hours here, fascinated by the vibrant marine life and tranquil underwater environment. The Open Sea exhibit, with its massive tank and abundant marine life, is usually a hit. Sardine schools shimmer and swirl together, creating a captivating sight.

Another favorite is the Kelp Forest exhibit, which showcases leopard sharks and marine otters in their natural setting. The interactive displays, such as the touch pools, allow you to get up close to starfish, sea urchins, and other tidal pool creatures. The aquarium also emphasizes conservation, teaching visitors on the necessity for safeguarding our environment. Every visit reminds me of the breathtaking beauty and the complexity of marine ecosystems.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is ideal for a family outing. The interactive events and exhibitions will captivate both children and adults. Plan a visit and make wonderful experiences with your family while instilling a love of the water and a dedication to safeguarding our marine habitats.

Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey is a location that seamlessly combines historical charm, delectable cuisine, and breathtaking coastal scenery. Every stay here is full of pleasant surprises and unforgettable experiences.

As you walk along the Wharf, you will be met by the alluring smell of fresh seafood. Enjoy a culinary trip with meals including delicious crab legs, flawlessly grilled salmon, and classic clam chowder served in warm sourdough bread bowls. Each meal is a testament to the Pacific's wealth, carefully cooked and packed with flavor.

It's more than just a foodie heaven; it's a vibrant hub of activity. Explore the one-of-a-kind stores where local artists exhibit their artwork and watch amazing street musicians perform. Come and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and natural beauty of Monterey's renowned landmark. You'll remember the experience for the rest of your life.

Monterey is where history, nature, and modern attractions combine to offer an amazing experience. Each day I live here provides me with fresh memories and a greater appreciation for this magnificent seaside paradise. So pack your bags and prepare to explore the beauty of Monterey—you won't be disappointed.
